This advanced level exam is an enjoyable challenge for most students. In my experience, it normally takes 2 to 3 years to play to a competent level (approximately grades 2/3 of the abrsm exam system). You need 100 marks to achieve pass, 120 marks to pass with merit and 130 marks to pass with distinction.

A student who has achieved a good pass, merit or distinction at grade 5 will be an extremely competent pianist able to read music and play a whole variety of pieces from classical through to pop and jazz.

For me, it completely depends on many factors. For example, if you have already played the violin to a grade 8 standard, you will be able to pick the piano up very quickly, to the point where it might only take you two years to be at the same level with your piano playing. Unlike studying to become a doctor, or getting a degree in history, here’s no fixed length course of study that results in getting to the required level in a certain number of years. This will normally take around 5 to 7 years to achieve. I can read music, but it takes me a long time to learn new sheet music.

Even though you might be able to finish learning theory and theory of the technique required to play piano, it is almost impossible to learn to play piano from scratch to grade 8 in 1 year (unless you practice 12 hours a day). The difficulty of the piece dictates pace, too, as does tempo. Loved it, sometimes it was hard, of course, but you need to enjoy it.

My biggest hurdle seems to be memorization. It is possible to learn a piece a few levels higher than your current level, but it may takes months of practice. Furthermore, there are people who have finished grade 8 but are still taking lessons because learning never stops.

Grade 8 is the final graded exam available from the associated board of the royal schools of music (abrsm). Total marks in all individual practical exams are 150. If you want to pass the grade 8 exam, then 3 years will do, but you will just get a pass.

It will be worth it in the long run and ignoring a problem part can cause frustration later on when it is the only part you cannot play. Depends on how much you can practice, and your previous musical experiences. Since performing music is very much a physical skill as well as a mental one, adult beginners may well make slower progress initially.

If you’re a total beginner, expect to be playing for at least five years before you get to the same level. I will give a student a short piece usually well within their capability one week and expect to hear it from beginning to end the next, no matter how sketchy or ropey the playing might be. To actually reach grade 8 level, it will take more than that.

Please print some mock abrsm exam forms and bring to your next. I have been doing mock exams each lesson. Many systems of piano study are organized with 10 levels or grades.

Well, you see, it isn’t like an academic qualification. But then again, i guess it depends how fast you learn, im a slow learner so i spend lots of time practising. Please have a read through the mock exam to see what level your child is currently playing at and what grade they can expect on the day.

30 mins a week will make learning pieces harder. It provides a lot of joy and excitement in my life. It took me a long time (got it when i was 18) simply because i learnt from a young age but never had a problem.

Crucially, however long it takes to accomplish basic skills, hopefully you will enjoy the musical journey, which will inspire continuation. I hold a grade 8 in the piano and i‘ve taught hundreds of people to play the piano and keyboard in my time. I'd say, if you wanted to get to that level, practising 2 hours a day would be beneficial.

The mock exam form will also highlight any weak areas that need particular attention. This is where quick studies come in. = hours and hours, until i can play the piece by heart, thats the the point you know you have the piece secure to play whenever.

I can certainly play through most anything after one week, but to really master a piece can take anywhere from 1 to 6 months, depending on so many variables. You may have been playing piano for a few years, and you can probably play chords easily. You probably memorize the music more than you read the sheet music.

Play c, d and e with fingers 1, 2 and 3. Identify any problem sections and break them down further. If you need to spend 10 minutes on getting 2 chords right, then spend 10 minutes on it.
